Hi all,
The first message from Turkey. We are getting very close to Istanbul now. As we wrote before, we left Sofia last frday and we started our journey to Bulgarias second largest city Plovdiv. The weather had cleared up and we were cycling n sunshine again. Friday was a tough day with some hills and quite some distance. We covered around 130km that day. We ended up in a small town Pazordski wich had a surprisingly good nightlife.
On Saturday we only needed to cycle 40km more to reach Plovdiv. We found a nice hotel around lunchtime and took the rest of the day to look at the town. Plovdiv has a very nice old centre with small cosy streets with a nice ancient feel to it. It seems to be a very artistic town since its covered n little art galleries.
Sunday we moved on. We had to cover about 190km to do so. On our way to Edirne we crossed a city Called Haskovo. Ths city had a carting track just before the city. As some People now Tjeerd loves Carting. So we had to stop to take a look. It seemed to be the best track of Bulgaria. To make a long story short Tjeerd rode the fasted kart they had (a 125cc rotaxmax-frst-kart(120+km)) and had his shear of fun for they. After 130km, and left the last 60 for today. Just after the 7 stops we had to take at the border, for the multiple passport checks, we were stopped by a friendly Turkish male, who gave us a couple of his own grown pears from his farm to welcome us to Turkey. Our first encounter with the Turkish hospitality spoken so frequently off. At the tourist information of Edirne we met a Japanese Guy who was traveling for 2 years now. The first 9 month he did some Chinese studying and since then he's cycling. He drove 15000 km already and was planning to do Europe now.
We just did the sightseeing walk in Edirne and found that it seems everybody here has something to do. Which s very dissimilar to Bulgaria where lots of people seem to do nothing all day. Also striking was the density of people walking everywhere. Edirne was the capital city of the Ottoman empire for a short while. So therefore there are lots of big interesting mosques to be found. It is actually quite a fun town for a stopover and is more interesting then you would expect. Istanbul is only 260km away now. We hope to arrive there on Thursday the 16th. We will try and upload some pictures there as well.

We are amazed at your speed! We got a message from Tjeerd stating you would be in Istanbul at the end of the month and now you will be there on the 16-th. Too bad we could not find a passage to Istanbul before the 26-th. So "till we meet again some day". Please do warn us beforhand so we can book a flight on the correct day.

At the travel agency there was a special warning for people leaving for Turkey.A vaccination for Hepatitis A/was strongley adviced.One gets the disease by eating raw ,uncooked food,
( vegtables,fruit) and drinking unboiled water.It is caused by a virus.I hope you are vaccinated. Good Luck and enjoy yourselves. -

I just talked about your trip to Mr. Biter, who cleans our office in Amersfoort after office hours. He comes from Samsun in the North of Turkey and invited you to his family house there. You can find his address in the telephone directory. On www.samsunili.net you can see and read all about his home town. It is a beautiful city along the sea. In the old days he had to drive via Ankara, but now or shortly there will be a highway from Istanbul along the North coast to Samsun and more to the East. -

Potdosie, dat is een flink eind fietsen. Al zadelpijn? :-) Vandaag wellicht al Instanbul, dan wordt het nu een keer een lang stuk door slechts één land heen. Gaan jullie langs de kust fietsen of dwars door het binnenland?
Ik kijk al weer uit naar de nieuwe foto's. -

@Cees. Vakantie? je begint al een echte MAAer te worden! What betreft het ADRN ik betwijfel of het wel nieuwswaardig is. Er zijn al wel meer gekken die dit gedaan hebben.
@Peter H, volgende landje word Iran maar dat gaat nog wel ff duren Turkije is best groot weet je...
@Gloria en Gerard. No worries Tjeerd en ik hebben beide de hele mikmak aan inentingen Hepatitus A/B Geelzucht Japanse enfalitus Rabies etc.... We zijn een brok weerstand!
@Henk en Truus. Helaas zijn de kaartjes van de site hier en kunnen we ze niet editen. We proberen het kruisje op het kaartje wel altijd zo nauwkeurig mogelijk neer te zetten, met een atlas moet het dan wel te vinden zijn.
@Ning en Olger. Foto's opladen is vaak lastig we willen hier alles branden en het dan naar Nederland sturen/ Van daar kan dan makkelijkerer alles to Istanbul beschikbaar gemaakt worden.
@Schuur. Plan de campagne komt in het volgende berichtje...
