Hi all,

Nice to see we are still getting a lot of feedback on the site. As said in the last message we enjoyed a nice day of rest in Baile Herleculare. We definitely needed it 181km with luggage is a bit to much for the ever growing legs ;). During our day of we enjoyed had a look at the town which seems to attract a lot of local tourism. There are all sorts of walking paths in the mountains that people go to. But since it was a rest day no more activity for us. In the evening we met a dutch couple and enjoyed quite a few beers with them. In the end we went to bed around 3.30 in the morning. Ralph and Lisette in case you are reading this, enjoy your trip through Romania and let us know what it was like.

For us it was a late start and we got on the bicycles around 12.00. We decided to go south and have a look into Serbia. This way we get to see yet another country and we also avoid the big turn the Donau is making there. After about 35 km, we crossed the border to Serbia. For the first time this trip some officials were actually checking something and we got a nice stamp in out passports. First thing we noticed is that the Serbians we met where kind and interested. I suppose Serbians don't have too many visitors after the recent past and they welcome everyone that decides to come have a look. Even though we started out quite late we still managed to progress 100km. We settled in a small village Negotin, not to far from the Bulgarian border.

The next day we crossed the border and headed for Vidin (or ридин in cyrillic), there we had our first experiences with Cyrillic writing. It takes some getting used to but by now we can almost read all the signs on the roads and figure out were we need to go. Vidin was only about 50 km from Negotin, but the legs for both of us were not that strong and we did not feel like taking the extra 100km on to Montana which would have been the next place were we could sleep. So it was a short day with some sightseeing in Vidin. First thing we noticed was the signs hanging everywhere. They were pictures of deceased people. It is custom here to inform people this way until the whether takes the signs away. What we also noticed was that the streetdogs are not dangerous, its the domestic dogs you want to be careful about.

The next day was of to Montana, the terrain was already getting a bit more difficult there. But the real climbing still had to start. After that it was of to Sofia, still about 150km, so we figured, it would have been a bit much for one day. On the road to Sofia we passed a Monastery open for visitors near the river and were invited in for a lunch. All totally free of charge and on invitation of the people there. After our meal we were called in by the Bishop and received his blessings. It was nice to see a Christian Orthodox monastery, since we had never seen one before. With our bellies full we continued on our trip. The stop had taken us quite long and therefore (that and the hills) Sofia was not an option for the day. Meaning we still had to cover 45km to Sofia today. We spent the night in Svoge, a nice small town next to the river Iskar. We finalised the last km this morning and arrived around noon in Sofia.

Today we did some sightseeing in Sofia (софия) and saw, The statue of st. Sofia, the Communist Party Head Quarters and the main tourist attraction; the Christian Orthodox Cathedral. It's a nice town to see but we fell we have covered the main tourist attraction and will probably be moving on 2morrow, after exploring the nightlife first of course ;)

Time to move into town to get some food and nice cold beers.

Talk to you all laters....

    Dave & Marielle:

Yaaaaa were first now to sey something to you.

I was hoping that the weather is being well there cos the weather forecasts here don't predict anything good. Especially not for the areay you're in.

Summer here is crap!! About 18 degrees, showers and very grey. So really nice Dutch summer!!

For me it's still three weeks to go but them I'm off and I'm going to pick up Dave and then he will stay for good!!! Makes me very happy :)

We can't believe that you've done so well so soon. We hope you enjoy the rest of your trip and our thoughts are with you.

I hope you can reach me the next time you try to call me cos I felt really bad that I've missed your call :'(

We still miss you a lot and can't wait to catch up with you as soon as you're back!! :)

Very big hug from both of us and a big kiss from me.

    Peter S.:

Hey boys, seems to me you guys are still doing well. Have the feeling that Serbia is now your second favourite place you visited. Your story makes me want to visit the places you went (ex. Romania ofcourse)

    Gloria And Gerard:

You do not mention where you slept during this last part. The camping sites seem to stay at the places they were meant to be or you have met again friendly inhabitants that offered their garden at your service. Monasteries seem to offer also hospitality as you already have expirienced. How kind to invite you for a meal! There are heavy storms with lots of water in Zwitserland and Italy. Hopefully these storms stay away from the Balkan.

    Erik:

    Hi All,

    To answer some questions:
@marielle, the weather has been lousy for a good day or 3. We've had lots of rain, but the last 2 days were quite sunny. I guess I'll see what the future brings since I hardly pick up any weather forecasts here. Hopefully you can enjoy some nice days in NL as well. For Dave, at least it'll beat an English summer ;)

@gloria and gerard, we have not seen any camping sites after Romania, but managed to find fairly cheap hotels on our route. In every medium to large town you can always find something. Ussualy for about 15-30 euro, not as cheap as camping but it sure beats sleeping in the wild... ;)

    Yours,

    Erik

Komen er nog nieuwe foto's aan? :)

    Pisti:

Only 10 days from Dömsöd to Sofia by bike? It's not that far. :) Great job.
Don't forget about how Bulgarians say yes and no that I told you when you were here.

My father told me a story about his business trip in Sofia many many years ago when I was a child and socializm was in Eastern Europe.

They went into a cafeteria in Sofia and asked do you have coffee in Russian which was the mostly spoken foreign language at that time in Eastern Europe. The waiter nodded, so they sat in and started to wait for the service. When the waiter came they ordered 4 coffees. The waiter was looking at them strange. Then they spoke more and made the fact clear that they do not have coffee.

    Nodding means no in Bulgaria.
But not always, as I heard the Bulgarians started to say yes in a 'normal' way at popular tourism areas, so nodding sometimes means no, sometimes means yes. :)

    Pisti:

    One more question.
In what language do you communicate in Romania and Bulgaria?

  • 11 Augustus 2007 - 11:10

    Dave:

Thought I would write something & stop being lazy & get Marielle to write something for me ;) Glad to hear you guys are making good progress & enjoying yourselves - bit of an eye opener I would imagine.

I bet your legs are toughening up well too, as well as your taste for so many different beers!

You're right though Erik, the weather in the UK is pretty similar to NL at the moment, but I know which country I'm happiest in :D Funnily enough, that moment in the pub when you realised you were finally jobless & homeless - give it around 3 weeks & I will be able to relate to that.

Anyway, keep up the good work & we're looking forward to the next update ..

    Erik:

again a brief moment of internet (very brief)

Communication is hard here, but our little point it book is great help. You just point at some foodtype and you can figure it out. Our Cyrillic is getting better, we can easily read most signs now. Pictures will probably follow in Istanbul. We wil stay there a good few days to get visa's sorten and will also have a bit more time then. The yes and no issue is indeed a bit confusing here, but we'll manage. So far its very nice out here and the weather is better too now... We'll try to write an update again soon...

For Dave, our bodies are running 1 on 40 at the moment. 1 liter of beer for each 40 km. But beers are about 0.75 euro here, so thats cheap transport... ;)

    Yours Erik

Zo dicht bij Griekenland en jullie gaan er niet heen??? Wij zien Griekenland als ons tweede vaderland, jammer dat jullie het links laten liggen. Anders konden we jullie wat Grieks leren.Goede reis verder en trapse..........

    Pisti:

In a decade Bulgaria may join the Euro Zone. So, in addition to Greek euro we will have Cyrillic euro too. It's time to start learning Cyrillic writing. :)

    Driedonks Family:

    Hi Guys!
We were one of the reasons for the long stop at the Cherpish monastry. We were also there for a stop at lunchtime. While the ladies were looking for a toilet they met Erik and Tjeerd. Of course we had to exchange information about camping in Turkey (Edirne and Istanbul)and other travel experiences. All 3 of us were impressed by the long trip the boys still had ahead and the preformance delivered so far. We will deliver the photo taken on erik's e mail adress.
    For now: enjoy the trip.
We will monitor via this site

Vidin is spelled: Bидин in Cyrillic
ридин is Ridin in Latin writing
