It seems our luck has changed for the better and we are finally blessed with some warm weather. Meanwhile we hear that southern China is more then "a little chilly" as we previously wrote. People are experiencing the worst winter in 50 years there, so it seems we left Southern China just in time. For us the weather is getting better by the day. It sure is no punishment to cycle through beautiful wet rice paddies that cover the country here.
We have been travelling at a nice and steady pace since our last message and are well under way towards Saigon now. We made some nice stops on the way. We've passed the DMZ (demilitarized zone) and are now officially travelling in what was formerly known as south-Vietnam. First striking difference is that the people in the South speak English a lot better then the folks up in the North. It makes communications a bit easier.
One of the first interesting stop was the town of Hue. Here we have looked at the ancient Citadel. Unfortunately it has been bombed by the Americans in the war, but it's still a nice place to visit. It seems to be a bit of a travel hub as well because it's crowded here with backpackers and other travellers. So one week there is no Westerners to be found and then suddenly they are everywhere. At least it gives a good opportunity to enjoy a beer or two and eat something else for a change. Don't get us wrong we love Pho (noodlesoup) but a bit of change every now and then is welcome as well.
After Hue we headed for Danang the fourth largest city in Vietnam. On the way there we had a funny incident. We enthusiastically reply to all the Vietnamese kids screaming hello from us from every corner. We say hello back to them countless times a day. Every now and then kind put up their hand so we can give them a high five while going by. Of course we play along with that as well. One kid had a hand full of mud and managed to high five Tjeerd with it. We had a good laugh and can appreciate that sense of humor ;) Arriving in Danang we discovered that the town itself does not have so much interesting to offer. We made a stop anyways to go to the post office and pick up Tjeerd's simcard that was send there by Waikong from Hong Kong. At first we were told nothing had arrived at the post office. But after returning the next day with the tracking number from Hong Kong they miraculesly changed their mind and suddenly it was already there for over a week. Miracles do happen ;)
After Danang we took a bit of a restday and cycled only 35 km to Hoi An. A nice little town on a river where we relaxed a bit exploring the city, shooting some pool. Drinking some beer. Having some great food... you know the usual :) Next day we headed of well rested and did a nice 120 to the southeast. Today we added another 147 km to the total. We are getting closer to our next goal: Nha Thrang, a nice beach resort. We should reach it in a day or three...

Goed om te horen dat het weertje weer beter gaat worden en een leuk strand in aantocht is. Geweldig om zoveel moois te zien. Weer heel veel plezier toegewenst en ik ben benieuwd naar jullie volgende avonturen!

Nice to hear everthing is well and that the simcard I bought flying back from India finally has found its destination.
We did have some hail stones in our garden, but now the sun is shining here in Brabant. Gloria is singing downstairs with her choir and I am walking or computering.

Leuk weer wat te horen en lekker voor jullie dat het weer beter wordt, hier niet echt.Die markt ziet er goed verzorgd uit. Verder niet zo veel te melden. Hou jullie haaks en op naar het strand, nemen jullie daar een paar dagen "rust"? Lijkt me lekker, zou het ook wel willen even in de zon liggen.

Tjeerd, je hebt brede armen gekregen van dat fietsen! We hopen dat je/jullie het naar je zin hebben, geniet lekker aan de kust! Elkaar al de tent uit geslagen? Heb je al 'mangostones' gegeten? (witte vruchtpartjes in aubergine-kleurige schil, vrucht is circo 5 cm doorsnee)
Even een update vanuit Nederland:
Geert en ik hebben een huis gekocht in Leiderdorp, we zijn nu boven aan het klussen. Beneden is het bijna klaar. Remco en Mariska hebben ook huis gekocht, in Hazerswoude. We zijn laatst bij ze aan het slopen geweest.
Hier gaat alles goed! We denken aan je hoor. Liefs van ons, Geert en Mary -

Wat een mooie verhalen. Jullie maken echt heel veel mee. Ons avontuur zit erop en we zitten nu dus met veel jaloezie naar jullie weblog te kijken.
